Ratanakiri Coffee Project
CAMBODIA

We are pleased, in conjunction with American Assistance for Cambodia and Japan Relief for Cambodia, to offer a new coffee blended with beans from Ratanakiri province in Cambodia. The beans have recently come under excellent review in the discerning Japanese coffee market. Ratanakiri is one of Cambodia's most beautiful regions, and one of its poorest.

beautiful falls in Ratanakiri Province

Most of the population lives well below poverty level. The coffee is grown in a cooler northern climate where orchards are irrigated by mountain streams. Profits from the sale of this coffee will help Ratanakiri farmers learn new ways of growing, processing and marketing their beans. Proceeds will also be used to improve local medical clinics and build new schools. Thank you for supporting this unique venture and contributing towards the goal of self-sustainability in an independent market for the Cambodian coffee farmers.

LIMITED EDITION LABELS: The coffee labels will feature limited edition revolving artwork created by the children of Ratanakiri province. The artwork features scenes from everyday life in Ratanakiri. Many thanks are due to our label designer, Melissa Winger (WingerDesign), for her efforts towards this project. Below is a letter from one of the founders of this project to Melissa upon seeing the labels.

Melissa,
These are beautiful.
I am looking at the labels on board a flight from Tokyo to Bangkok.

Knowing the kids at the Vogel School, I can guarantee that they will be absolutely tickled to see the results of their work.

This is exciting.

In January 2003, this was a remote part of the world which had no electricity and no phone lines, and only eight moderately trained medical doctors. Now it has a school with a decently equipped computer room, a hospital which has several pieces of state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, and access to the Internet so that doctors in Boston can guide the medical treatment of the patients.

Kids from this area have now appeared in articles in the New York Times and International Herald Tribune, and the results of their artwork appear on labels of coffee from the local coffee fields.

All of this in only 15 months.

Thanks for being a part of all this.

Rick Dyck

TRADITIONAL CAMBODIAN ICE COFFEE: To make coffee as the Cambodians do, grind the beans for drip method and put two heaping tablespoons per cup into a paper filter apparatus. After boiling the water, let it sit off the burner for one minute, then pour over the grounds. For a more traditional drink, pour the coffee over the same grounds three times. While still hot, pour over a glass of ice, and serve with canned sweetened condensed milk.
